Algorist Diary: 100 days of Sketches

It is still a revolutionary notion that, if given the right set of instructions, a computer can compose a piece of art that is meaningful. The duty of the algorist is to transmute computer code into art and art-making tools, occasionally designing algorithms that merely reveal the conditioned ways of its programmer.

Entry #100: For those who don’t know, 13 months ago I embarked on the noble quest of creating 100 computer drawings (aka ‘sketches’). I was very excited about exploring code as an ‘expressive medium’ - writing algorithms that could simulate patterns from nature, visualize mathematical sequences, enable simple music-making tools, or allow the contemplation of random scribblings on a screen. Yesterday, a year and a month later I finished the 100th sketch! It has been a revealing and beautiful experience - perhaps, this is the best way of learning anything! The commitment that comes with the time limitation + the encouragement of sharing the progress with friends is truly powerful.
